Edmond and Lucie Cousturier papers, circa 1890-1908.

The papers include 73 letters and postcards, two sketchbooks, and one manuscript. Most of the letters and all 25 postcards are from Henri Edmond Cross to Maximilien Luce or Edmond and Lucie Cousturier. Among the rest of the letters are four from Lucien Pissaro, three from Paul and Berthe Signac, and two from Edgar Degas to Pierre-Georges Jeanniot. Also included are two small sketchbooks by Cross and a four-page manuscript of an article by Georges Lecomte. The collection documents aspects of Neo-Impressionism as it was discussed and practiced by artists in the 1890s and the first decade of the 20th century, from artists' day-to-day painting activities to topics such as the roles of reason and intuition in painting, specific color palettes and compositions, the abstraction of nature, and principles of science that inform technique.
